It seems that not a week goes by in which someone doesn’t find yet another use for a beach as art. We all know how fun it can be to write our names and draw pictures in the sand but now people are going a step further. We recently told you about Steve, a road sweeper in Devon, who writes daily motivational messages in the sand. Now Everton Wright has enlisted the help of about 20 horses and riders to produce a visual masterpiece on Silecroft Beach in Cumbria. The work is completed in just 5 and a half hours before the tide rises and washes away the creation.
The beach is the perfect canvas for art because it costs nothing and can be freely accessed and admired by anyone. When the tide rises and falls, the slate is then wiped clean for a new artist and new inspiration. Both Steve and Everton have provided a plethora of memories and photographs but neither of them took anything from the beach itself. When we stroll along the golden sands at low tide we should think of it as a blank canvas awaiting our creativity. The question is what to create…
