Having swept their way through Europe, the final stop for our volunteers sees them cross the English Channel to tackle the UK’s beaches.
By and large, the majority of beaches in the south of England are relatively well-kept, though Marcos and Ramon do come across the worst beach they’ve seen throughout their escapade. Indeed they note that Schult could probably build a whole new hotel from rubbish collected at this beach alone! Maybe next year…
So despite numerous campaigns to make people aware of the damage being caused, rubbish continues to mount on the nation’s beaches.
Of the rubbish found, a whopping 70% is plastic and as our volunteers note, plastic is a major source of pollution and impacts severely on the environment.
According to a report from the Marine Conservation Society, more than a third of rubbish found on beaches is caused by its visitors, far exceeding the amount produced by the fishing industry and shipping companies. This proves that the future of our beaches is in our hands – we have the power to save them!
