Goodbye for now…

Afternoon everyone! Would you believe that this is our last blog post? Time flies when you’re having fun but this won’t be the last you hear of Corona Save the Beach! Initiated to promote the preservation of beaches across Europe, the Corona Save the Beach campaign will be back raising awareness soon, so watch this space. In the meantime, lets recap on a wonderful campaign, made possible by the help and continued support of all of you.

Initially we penned a Hotel Diary, mapping the progress of our volunteers Marcos and Ramon on their escapade across the European coast, cleaning and gathering rubbish to be used for the erection of the world’s first rubbish hotel.

Earlier in the year, we commissioned environmental action artist HA Schult, famed for his object and performance art and more specifically his work with garbage, to build the hotel. The picturesque creation was positioned in Rome, not far from the city’s Castle of Saint Angelo and welcomed supermodel and eco-warrior Helena Christensen as its first guest. Corona also invited fans from Spain, England and Italy to spend a night at the hotel, an experience to remember for Rebecca and Allan Thompson from London.

In July, Corona Save the Beach collaborated with a number of Spanish artists such as Oreja de Van Gogh, Zenttric and Diego Martin to stage a solidarity concert to further increase awareness of the cause.

Throughout the activity mentioned above, campaign supporters were constantly submitting their neglected beaches on our website, an initiative that we felt warranted recognition and as such we sent Alicia Esteban on a trip to Cancun! More than 500 endangered beaches were submitted in total with interaction and involvement constantly gathering momentum over time.

We kept our blog and Facebook updated throughout to keep everyone in the loop and we hope you enjoyed reading about our many tales of the environment and beach-based initiatives. Of course our spectacular Wednesday videos kept our Facebook fans amused!

In August we reached the climax of our campaign with the announcement of ten shortlisted beaches, battling it out in a public vote to be saved. After a tense vote and nail-biting finale, Bahia de Portman took the majority share, closely followed by Litorale di Augusta. We must again thank supporters of both beaches and everyone else who participated and heightened awareness of a major environmental concern.

Finally, we had the clean-up itself with over 500 volunteers braving the heat to save Bahia de Portman, collecting over 5,000kg of rubbish in the process.

So there we have it, a memorable campaign comes to a close. Thank you all for your tremendous support thus far, we’ll be rounding up the troops again shortly so expect a new range of ideas to promote the preservation of our beaches very soon…
